Coding

An area of concern for ophthalmology is inconsistent coding of procedures. This workstream commenced in May 2018 with a National Ophthalmology Coding Workshop, with UKOA members including coders attending from across the country supported by colleagues from the NHS Digital National Casemix Office and Clinical Classifications Service. The purpose of the workshop was to increase the quality of coding through developing a greater shared understanding of the process between clinicians, managers and coders, and improved communication around coding for all members of the ophthalmology teams.

Our guidance documents are available to download here for members and available for anyone to download from our Publications section on the UKOA website;

We are also hoping to look at coding for other areas of ophthalmology in due course. If members have any trust coding guidance documents to share on coding for non cataract areas or would like to suggest a priority area for developing coding guidance, or have any comments on our current documents, please get in touch at ukoa@rnib.org.uk
