UKOA Chair Retirement and New Chair

Most of our members will already be aware that Melanie Hingorani is retiring in October and therefore stepping down as our Chair. Melanie set up the UKOA and has been the key driver for both the UKOA’s success and also ensuring that our meetings are extremely relevant and valuable for our members. The UKOA are extremely grateful for the dedication and support that Melanie has brought to the Chair role and we wish her a happy and well deserved retirement.

We are pleased to announce that a new chair has been selected following an open competition. We are delighted to welcome Bushra Mushtaq as our new Chair from the 1st of August 2023.

Bushra is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in medical retina and the Diabetic Retinopathy lead at Birmingham and Midlands Eye Centre (BMEC) at Sandwell and West Midlands NHS Trust in Birmingham.

Bushra says “Coming from a back ground of clinical leadership in one of the largest eye departments in the country, and now as the new chair of UKOA, I will be continuing with my ethos of shared learning, promotion of best practice, celebrating success by departments and adopting effective lean systems in the ever increasing and challenging NHS environment.

In my UKOA Chair role I will be open and inclusive and ensure that all member providers benefit from the joining up that UKOA brings. This will involve sharing learning for all ophthalmology professionals and working collaboratively to ensure improved services for patients across the UK. As a UK wide body for all professionals we are stronger and have the ability to shape ophthalmology’s future which serves our patients bests and keeps staff engaged and motivated.”
